Me and my husband went to China town in nyc and we decided to hop into this place based on the ratings. We were disappointed to see the restaurant from outside as it was shabby and saw all the live fishes, crabs and lobsters in the aquarium which was not very clean. Yet our zest to try out and to explore took us inside and we were fairly happy. We had a late lunch, probably at 4, and saw all the restauranteurs happy having their meals. A young lady came to us and presented the menu. We tried all the new and bizarre food- jelly fish with pork, crispy fried quail and tortoise soup. Chinese green tea was complimentary. It was a little difficult to make the lady understand as she was not very comfortable with English. But we enjoyed the everything except they small mistake by serving a bowl of ginseng and tortoise soup, it was horribly bitter. When I complained about the bitterness a gentleman probably the owner came to us and apologized. He didn’t even charge for that plate. Surprisingly they served us mandarin orange at the end of the meal. It was a great experience.

This is an amazing place. First things first. This is a wonderful place to visit. Its like stepping into another country. Secondly, the food is some of the freshest you are going to find in Chinatown and for that matter in New York. When you enter, your future meal can potentially be swimming within inches of you. If you can’t into that, this is not your place. If you have no problem knowing what your food looks like in its natural and live state, this may be the place for you. Given the harrowing nature of recent events in the city I decided to go with comfort food. I had scallops with a black peppercorn sauce. It was heavenly. The scallops were perfectly buttery and succulent and the sauce was a wonderful counterpoint in taste. The service was efficient, friendly and very helpful. My particular waiter had a difficulty with some of the menu items I was asking about. I believe it was not for the effort but for a language barrier. That didn’t stop him from helping. He brought over a fellow waiter who assisted him in the proper translation. All in all a wonderful experience. This is a place to visit if you want to actually eat the food from China. If you want dishes involving candied pork and chop suey, stay close to Canal Street and look for the places full of out of town tourists.

I read that Daniel Boulud eats here. If it’s good enough for him it’s good enough for everyone else. Seriously, I love their clam and chili pepper soup as well as the Dungeoness crab.
